"When we avoid the legitimate suffering that results from dealing with problems, we also avoid the growth that problems demand from us."
Scott Peck
Substance Use Assessments: This process utilizes a semi-structured clinical interview with objective paper and pencil questionnaires to determine whether an individual has a substance use problem, as defined in the DSM-IV-TR and if a disorder exists, what type of treatment intervention is indicated. This assessment process, utilizing different screening/assessment instruments, is also utilized with family members of substance abusers, supporting them to enter into recovery from the chaos of addiction.
U.S. D.O.T. Substance Use Assessments and Casemanagement Services: This service also begins with a semi-structured clinical interview with objective paper and pencil questionnaires to determine whether an individual has a substance use problem, as defined in the DSM-IV-TR. These findings then determine the initial service plan activities to be followed and casemanagement to final follow-up is provided.
Brief-Intervention or Solution Focused Therapy: Typically ranging from 5-12 individual sessions, this process addresses a specifically identified problem relating to substance abuse. These sessions are an appropriate intervention for substance users who do not meet the full criteria for substance dependence or for family members who are just coming to terms with the reality of addiction.
Family Therapy: These sessions can be with either first the family member of the substance user or both parties. The family member is assisted in working through the feelings of loss, anger and sadness stemming from the chaos of addiction so that the family member can engage in their own program of recovery, addressing their own enabling beliefs and behaviors.
Group Therapy: Group therapy provides the environment to practice newly learned/acquired skills for sober living. A lifestyle change is not easy to make or maintain. Lapses (a one-time return to addictive behavior) and relapses (a return to an addictive lifestyle) do occur. Preventing relapse requires the development of a plan of action tailored to maintaining new behavior. The plan involves integrating diversion activities, coping skills, and emotional support. The group promotes continued physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health.
